Anita Wadhwani: Industry is in harmony on access to digital music

Music Row

The process of creating a single and universal technical standard for digital music has gotten one step closer, following an international meeting in Nashville.

Any transaction involving online music requires a standard protocol — embedded data associated with the file that identifies the music, the artist, the songwriter, the record label and other bits of information about the song — that follows the music file through the supply chain from creator to consumer.

The information attached to each piece of music is critical in getting it from one company to another — from the record label to iTunes or Pandora, for example, in a format that both companies can recognize and that copyright companies can track to determine how much in royalties artists and songwriters have earned.

It’s the same footprint that those tracking online piracy follow to determine what songs are being shared or downloaded illegally, and where.

And for the past several years, most of the world’s major recording companies and music rights societies, along with companies like Google and iTunes, have agreed to adopt a single, international standard for tracking digital music.
