Nicki Minaj's 'Starships' to Break U.K. Record

The song is currently No. 5 on the U.K. music charts making Minaj the first female rapper in 11 years to chart since Missy Elliott ‘s ’4 My People’ in 2001. If the song continues its pace to the top, the Young Money rapper will set a new record as the highest-charting female rapper on the U.K. charts.

It appears the U.K. fans love Minaj’s pop-tinged single, as oppose to the naysayers here in the States. Since the release of ‘Starships,’ she has been accused of selling out for pop stardom. Fans are even lukewarm on her much-edgier song, ‘ Roman Reloaded .’

As we previously reported , Minaj defended her song choices and insists that she hasn’t turned her back on the hip-hop community. “I think people sometimes get blown away by the magnitude of the pop stuff, because the pop stuff, it reaches everywhere and then I feel like my hip-hop fans or hip-hop culture starts getting a little bit afraid that I’m going to leave,” she says.
